Zaha hadid design for Cairo Expo City
Sunday 05th of July 2009 02:58:26 AM

Zaha Hadid the famous and one of the most important designers of our times and her fellow  Architects at her studio (ZHA) won the Cairo Expo City Competition, beating Norwegian architecture practice Snøhetta. The award-winning architecture firm will design two 31 and 33-storey towers to function as exhibition halls, conference centres as well as mixed-use areas.

ZAHA will be designing Cairo Expo City together with global multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold. a 450,000 square metre, state-of-the-art city for exhibitions and conferences, located between the centre of Cairo and the city’s airport. The project comprises a major international exhibition and conference centre with business hotel. A further office tower and a shopping centre are also proposed. With this exceptional design by Zaha Hadid Architects, Cairo will be among the world’s top cities for conferences and fairs, able to cater for the widest variety and size of events.”

The Cairo Expo City design was inspired by the natural topography of the Nile valley explained Zaha Hadid. “As the exhibition spaces require the greatest degree of flexibility, we wanted to ensure that all the public spaces and formal composition of Cairo Expo City relate to the surrounding Egyptian landscape.” said Hadid

Zaha Hadid is a British-Iraqi architect. Her designs have been theoretically influential and groundbreaking, although not all of them have actually been constructed. She is currently a professor at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna

artist of the week : Philip George
Sunday 05th of July 2009 02:43:50 AM

Sydney Lebanese Australian artist Phillip George designed the range of 30 'Inshallah' or 'God Willing' boards in response to his trips to the Middle East, and to the Cronulla Race Riots in 2005, in an effort to create a lesser divide between East and West. As an artist, he decorates the boards with Islamic motifs and iconography from the historic mosques he visited.

Phillip surfs at Maroubra Beach, Australia. He was moved deeply by the Cronulla Race Riots.

That occurred On December 11, 2005 . some Cronulla locals took part in a demonstration to chase away ‘gangs’ of Lebanese-Australian men from the Western Suburbs of Sydney, while others just wanted to relieve the boredom brought about by no swell on a hot summer day. The trigger was the beating up of a couple of Australian Lifesavers by some Lebanese-Australian blokes. (Nb. The lifesavers were out of uniform and hassling the visitors at the time).

Fuelled by alcohol, the media, rumour, innuendo, and macho bullshit the demonstration escalated into a full-blown riot.

The surfboards have been inscribed with iconography from the historic mosques that Phillip George has photo documented from his trips to the Middle East, travelling to Iran, Syria, Turkey, and Iraq. The images are detailsof the internal walls of mosques, entrance ways and thresholds. They are full of historical and spiritual significance. They reflect ‘repeating motifs of ‘the tree of life’ and ‘the Garden of Eden’ in their many manifestations from Egypt to Persia’ (Tsuotas, 2008).

By remapping the surfboards, George envelops the surfboard with different meanings and a different history, derived from Islam and Arabic culture, and challenges expectations of White Australia that too often go unchecked and unchallenged.

.his surfboards where exhibited last march at the Art Dubai fair and  This was regarded as controversial, because surfboards are to be stamped on. But Phillip cleared his point that the surfboards are not for actual use, so it will neither be placed on the ground nor stamped on. His piece attracted many visitors after.

The New Government download
Friday 12th of June 2009 01:51:58 AM

The Lebanese based rock bend ‘The New Government’ just released a new Album

 (On Lebanese Election Day)

The band was born in Beirut in November 2004. What initially came up was a 6-member band known as "The Government" eventually reached a configuration of 5 members (Jeremie, Zeid, Nabil, Cherif, Timothee) who proclaimed themselves "The New Government" (Since there was no official government at the time, so it made sense).

Although each of the band members has a different musical background, The New Government managed to find its trademark sound: a mixture of indie rock and post-punk with a retro touch reminiscent of the late 70s.

BARACK OBAMA: THE FRESHMAN
Friday 29th of May 2009 09:52:27 PM

M+B is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition BARACK OBAMA: THE FRESHMAN, black and white photographs by Lisa Jack.  First featured in Time Magazine’s 2008 “Person of the Year” Issue, which chose then President-elect Barack Obama for his “rare ability to . . . organize himself and others to anticipate change and translate it into opportunity,” these photographs offer a window back in time before the posters and before the campaign, when a 20-year-old young man was caught up in just such a change that Time Magazine would later describe. Lisa Jack, then a student of photography at Occidental College, sought a striking subject for a portrait project and was tipped off about a charismatic freshman named “Barry” Obama who would make an ideal subject.  After the shoot, these images would remain locked away for the next 28 years, until a dare from a friend triggered Lisa Jack to seek them out.  At first worried these images could be used against President Obama, Jack realized they were not incriminating of anything other than being young and self-conscious, and that they offered a unique glimpse into how the man who made history went from being “Barry” to Barack. This exhibition marks the first time these rare photographs have ever been printed and on display.
